Short answer
Last Pirates: Die Together supports solo play and online co-op for a maximum crew of four players. A full crew is you plus up to three friends. The official FAQ does not say that four players are required, so one-, two-, three-, and four-player crews all fit inside the confirmed player range.
What is not yet confirmed is just as important: the current official pages do not promise local split-screen, cross-platform co-op, or public matchmaking for the Early Access launch.
Confirmed crew sizes
| Crew size | Officially within the supported range? |
|---|---|
| 1 player | Yes—solo is explicitly listed |
| 2 players | Yes—online co-op within the four-player limit |
| 3 players | Yes—online co-op within the four-player limit |
| 4 players | Yes—the confirmed maximum |
| 5 or more | No—not supported by the published maximum |
Steam lists both Single-player and Online Co-op on the store page. The developer's pinned FAQ is even more direct: play solo or team up with friends, with a maximum crew size of four. The store description phrases the group option as working with up to three of your closest mates.
Do you need four players?
No official source says that you must fill every crew slot. Solo is a named mode, and any crew below the four-player cap is still within the published support range.
That does not prove every crew size will have identical difficulty. The game is designed around communication, carrying loot, handling danger, and creating opportunities for another pirate to escape. The developer also says teamwork is central to the experience. Those facts suggest that adding crew members changes how many jobs you can perform at once, but pre-launch material is not enough to calculate enemy scaling or name a “best” party size.
We will compare solo, duo, trio, and full-crew play only after the live Early Access build can be observed across the same version. Until then, claims such as “solo is easier,” “four players earn more,” or “enemies scale per player” would be guesses.
Is the co-op online or local?
The confirmed multiplayer feature is online co-op. Steam does not currently list Shared/Split Screen Co-op on the store page we checked, and the developer FAQ does not announce a local mode.
That means you should not buy the game expecting couch co-op on one PC unless the store page is updated to add it. Full controller support also does not prove split-screen support; controller input and multiplayer layout are separate features.
Does it have public matchmaking?
The demo did not have public matchmaking. A developer response from the demo period said the request had been added to the team's notes. That historical answer does not confirm the Early Access launch state.
For that reason, this page does not label Early Access matchmaking as available or unavailable. The reliable launch-day check will be the live game menu plus a current developer statement. If your plan depends on joining random players, wait for that verification rather than treating an old demo limitation as permanent.
The developer's current FAQ focuses on joining friends. It tells friends who cannot connect to make sure they selected the same region. Our voice chat and connection page covers that confirmed check without inventing additional network fixes.
Is cross-platform play confirmed?
No cross-play announcement appears in the official sources used here. The published launch platform is Steam for PC, and the page does not promise that players on another platform can join the same crew.
If more platforms or cross-play are announced, they should be treated as a dated update rather than inferred from controller support or marketing videos.
What will four pirates actually do together?
The official gameplay description gives the crew a shared objective: enter cursed locations, collect treasure, and bring it back to the ship while surviving the threats on the island. Players can use elastic arms to manipulate objects, and the developer describes actions such as grabbing valuables, pulling teammates out of danger, throwing objects, hiding, or distracting enemies.
Those mechanics create obvious roles—searching, carrying, watching for danger, or helping an escape—but the game has not published a fixed class system. Our gameplay loop guide explains the confirmed flow without turning flexible teamwork into made-up roles or builds.
